There are seating areas with comfortable chairs on both floors of the library.
The main floor has four tables which seat six, and some that seat four. There are 24 public computers which have ample work space, in addition to the email express computers. The main floor also has several study carrels, and near them are media carrels that have video and image players, and an electric piano.
On the top floor, the library has 20 individual carrels and a dozen tables (most seat four, a couple can seat six, and there are a few that seat only two).
There are several rooms within the library where students can meet in groups. These have tables, white-boards and markers, and, as of the start of the winter 2008 quarter, the library's portable teaching station may be checked out for use in one of these rooms for those preparing presentations. Study rooms, 201A on the main floor and rooms 301B and 301D on the top floor, can be reserved at the circulation desk, and are otherwise available on a first-come first-served basis. See also our floor plan.
Other study tables are found in the Heiner Center outside the library, in the corridors of the main floor and ground floor.
More about the library's space
Our library has lovely views of Mt. Baker. On the main floor is an installation of 500 origami peace cranes. The library has display cases within the library and in the Heiner Center lobby. We display library materials and items on a variety of topics and themes, from pens and pencils to poetry to sea shells. Also, student art work is often featured. Contact Laura Mackenzie for more information.
Throughout the library there are more than a dozen enlargements of old photographs chosen from the Photo Archives of the Whatcom Museum of History and Art depicting local history from the 1890s to the 1930s. The works of photographers Darius Kinsey, Clyde Banks, Leslie Corbett, J. Wilbur Sandison, and James McCormick are represented.
